Summer Slide
Have you heard of the “summer slide?” It is the concept that kids may be susceptible to losing some of the skills or gains they made in the previous school year. Some schools may even assign work for kids to do during the summer months to try and prevent a slide in their abilities. Although there may be some merit to a summer slide, research related to this concept is inconclusive. In an article written by two University of Miami professors (link below), it was emphasized that instead of focusing on a potential loss of learning it is important to “make sure students have access to quality nutrition, public health, mental wellness, and community resources.” There are many different ways to provide learning opportunities for our children. The summer months may also be an opportunity for kids to engage in more leisurely activities that promote mental wellness.
However, if you are concerned about your child’s learning and/or retention of learning, it is important to follow up with your child’s school about those concerns.
Wishing you and your family well this summer.
